How to Make Pottery at Home Without a Kiln
You can make lovely pieces at home using air-dry clay, no kiln needed. The method suits beginners and kids, and it is enough for small dishes, decorative bowls and candle holders.
The basic steps
Knead the clay to remove air, shape the piece by hand or with coils, and smooth the surface with a damp sponge. Dry it in a shaded spot for two to three days, then paint with acrylics and seal it. Do not use it for food or drinks. Kids love this project too, so it suits family afternoons. When you gain confidence, move on to wheel throwing and kiln-fired stoneware for durable, food-safe pieces.
